What is curling?

Curling is olympic sport with beginning in medevial Scotland. First references about curling are from 1541. Name of the game "curling" appeared in Perth in 1620. Nowadays majority of players are from Canada, where curling spread through scottish emmigrants. As a winter olympic sport is curling from 1998.

Curling is sport, where players are trying to deliver the stone slidingly to the marked target with the shape of circle (named house). In one sheet are playing 2 teams (4 players each), each team has 8 stones. When all stones are played from one side to the other (length of the sheet) team which has the closest stone to the center of the target (named button) is scoring. Number of points getting is depending on the number of own stones having closer to the button as the closest stones of the opponent. One going of stones from one side to the other is called end (analogy tenis: game). From the type of competition is 8 or 10 ends played.

Where can I try it in Slovakia?

In Slovakia there are 2 ice halls dedicated to curling. One is extension to Vladimir Dzurilla's ice rink in Ružinov (city part of Bratislava) and the second one is in Lamač (also city part of Bratislava)

What do I need to play?

At first you will need some warm clothes. In ice hall there is average temperature about 3 °C. Well hoodies, termo and warm socks are welcome. :)

 

In ice hall is everything you need. No player is taking stones with him (it is never like e.g. bowling).

 

Next you will need the broom- to sweep and call the line of the stone. It is known some different types of brooms, the difficulties will be written in new part of FAQ.

 

Next equipment is slippery sole or curling shoes. In this time in ice halls in Bratislava you can borrow slippery soles.

What you will need is also curling spirit- game of gentlemen, good mood and just feel the stream of curling atmosphere. :)
